Our network has been purpose built in order to provide the highest levels of uptime and resiliancy and is highly focused on redundancy. All devices are deployed with at least N+1 redundancy, ensuring that we achieve and exceed our customers expectations.

We currently operate redundant border routers - by utilising both Juniper and Cisco equipment software bugs, and security problems prompting upgrades do not affect network operation. Our external connectivity balances public and private peering with multiple premium suppliers of IP transit. Our current connectivity is directly provided by the following networks:

• Tiscali International
• NTT Communications
• Abovenet

By interacting directly with our suppliers we are able to ensure a stable business relationships and connections - we also benefit directly from our provider's pro-active monitoring systems.

Catalyst2 also peer at the following exchanges:

• LINX (Foundry and Extreme LANs)
• LONAP

Utilising peering connections allows us optimal routing to particular networks, and work directly with our peers to ensure sufficient capacity and quality of service exists for all traffic exchanged with their network. Additional capacity is always available so we can meet any sudden spikes in demand and quickly provision extra connectivity to customers.

Within our internal network internal cabling is laid via redundant routes within the datacentre, and each connection is load balanced between the two cables, therefore the failure of a single link does not affect customer operation.

Security is becoming increasingly important for all network-attached applications, ranging from hosting to secure transaction processing. By utilising a high availablility cluster of Fortinet Fortigate intrusion detection devices, with regularly updated attack fingerprints both unwanted traffic, common application-level attacks can be blocked at the network border. Devices on our network are regularly audited from a remote location to ensure that traffic is being blocked as intended.

Each server is connected to an access switch within the rack, in the case of failure, a warm spare access switch is available, with identical configuration within the same rack. Our cable design system ensures that switch failure can be resolved within a matter of minutes.

In order to mitigate any power-related problems within the datacentre, our core equipment is connected to APC UPS devices, which allow approximately two hours of network operation with no external power provision. This ensures the power-failure of a core node in the network does not affect overall operation at the site.

By utilising well engineered cabinets, and cabling systems, we ensure that our systems are easily manageable, and maintenance work does not affect additional systems. Each Catalyst2 server is connected to remote-reboot switches - allowing direct power management - and a KVMoIP (IP-enabled keyboard-video-mouse switch) is available in each location in order to troubleshoot and resolve any server issues.
